Vintage Centre Pin Antique Fishing Reel Gallery : R101 - R108

Descriptions:

Please take the time to read an items description carefully before deciding on a purchase. We will try to list any mechanical faults as well as all cosmetic issues with each individual vintage fishing reel. The collectibles listed in this category are intended for display purposes and not serviced with the intention of being used although some items will be capable of functioning without an issue. Many of the reels listed below will be unmarked with regard to a manufacturer although commonly recognised premium names such as Hardy, Allcocks, Carter, Witcher and Youngs are also listed. Early manufactured centre pin fishing reels are very tactile, extremely well made and feature only the highest quality materials, they display very well, and are strong and durable, in most cases are waterproof and resilient to wear and tear and the elements. Please be aware of the reel sizes, in hand they are relatively small ( see dimensions ).

 3x Straight-Back Nottingham Centre Pin Reels ( £124.95 - Order Number - R101 )

Three very similar and matched Nottingham reels in a mixture of Mahogany and Walnut with full brass polished fittings. The largest 3" centre pin reel is clearly marked for Allcocks, it turns freely, is highly attractive with no damage, wooden handles and all original screws and polished brass straight back reel seat. The brass handled 2.5" is slightly later production and not manufactured to the higher standard of the Allcocks reel, featuring lighter weight brass reel seat and brass handles that originally would have been painted black, it turns but there is a slight rubbing point that could be resolved if desired. The final 2.5" reel has a ratchet mechanism, fully working with a smooth sliding full brass button. Fitted with brass painted handles, it turns freely and has had a reel seat modification, with a double brass seat to widen the thickness. This trio is a fantastic looking set, all very similar in appearance, all highly polished with fabulous wood grain and complimented by polished brass parts. These Nottingham reels are totally under-appreciated, they are manufactured and finished to a high standard, they look and feel very tactile and with great antique appeal and make a nice display set for the enthusiast of just as a talking point for display.

  3x Brass Crank & Plate Wind Centre Pin Reels ( £94.95 - Order Number - R102 )

Three brass centre pin reels with two bearing a maker mark. The largest is clearly marked for the Milbro company, constructed from Brass plate and with a Bakelite handle it dates to around 1940, it turns freely with no damage and has cleaned up very well. The medium sized reel is clearly marked for the renowned manufacturer of Allcocks, constructed in solid brass and with a built in working ratchet, this reel is a great little performer, fully working and built to last, it dates to around 1920 and fully polished is very pleasing on the eye. The smallest reel is the earliest, Victorian manufacture but unmarked regarding a maker, it is in original un-polished condition, with a fabulous dark handling patina to the full brass heavy construction. No ratchet on this reel and it is missing the wood or bone handle, although the shank remains in place but with some movement. This trio displays together very well, a ready made collection for the shelf or display case.

 2x Nottingham Mahogany Straight-Back Centre Pin Reels ( £75 - Order Number - R103 )

A pair of original and un-polished Mahogany Nottingham reels, both in very good condition and well matched visually. The larger 3.5" reel has a ratchet and working stud ( a little stiff ), the brass fittings are un-cleaned with a lovely handling patina as does the rich Mahogany woodwork to the thick slab type spool and back panel. This reel does snag when turning but is easily resolved if you are looking to use it as a working addition to your fishing kit. The rear of the brass seat still has 100% of the original lacquered finish with the brass handles showing handling wear to the black painted finish. The smaller reel is visually very similar to the first, constructed to a very good standard in original un-messed with condition. It spins freely, with minimal wear to the black painted handles and much of the original lacquer remaining to the reel seat. No maker marks to either but it would not surprise me that both came from the same source, they compliment each other well, both with dark toning to the Mahogany woodwork and with virtually identical fittings. Lovely graining is also evident to both spools / reels.

Allcocks 3.5" Walnut Straight-back Centre Pin Reel ( £69 - Order Number - R104 )

Reworked for display rather than use, this 3.5" Nottingham reel from  the renowned and respected manufacturer of Allcocks & Co of Redditch, England has been sanded, stained sealed and waxed. This not only brings out the fabulous grain of the woodwork, it also retains the antiqued appearance whilst removing any dents, dings or finish lifting. Both handles are fixed, with one oddly showing more handling wear than the other although both are original to the reel, the foot or brass seat still has much of the original gilt finish and is clearly marked with the Allcocks moniker. It has all original screws and fittings, turns freely, although the locking nut dictates how freely it runs, for this reason along with the finish applied this reel is recommended for display purposes only. There are two old screw holes to the reverse side where the line guide once sat. Lovely Walnut woodwork on this one and a highly desirable piece, manufactured around c1900.

Brass Polishing:

We also offer a brass polishing service, where we remove all exterior brass fittings and polish to a high sheen which seems to be popular when matching a metronome to a piano for display purposes. We do not clean the fittings by default unless we feel the unit warrants it and any item shown on the website without cleaned brass-work is sold as viewed. We will however, under instruction polish fittings once a unit has been purchased for a standard charge of £9.95. Occasionally metronomes can be fitted with nickel silver or copper metal-work and in most cases these are best left to develop a deep handling patina. We will advise if we do not think that a unit would benefit from this service.
